Heavenly escape
- Ventry (Ceann Trá)

The Dingle News - Ireland

Ventry, or Ceann Trá as it is known in Gaelic, is quite simply one of the most beautiful places you could ever wish to visit. Located approximately 10km west of Dingle town, Ventry boasts one of Ireland's most beautiful beaches, which stretches along the Atlantic sea-board for five miles (making it Ireland's third longest beach). This golden sandy beach is also certified as a Blue Flag beach. There you can indulge in swimming, wind-surfing, canoeing and a plethora of other water-sports along with horse-riding on the beach or in trekking on the nearby mountain, Mount Eagle.

The Dingle Way walk also stretches along the beach and in-roads of Ventry. Overlooking the beach is Ventry village, quaint, rural and quintessentially Irish. Sporting enthusiasts will also enjoy Ventry as it is the home village of GAA legends Páidi Ó Sé and his nephews Dara, Marc and Tomás. Páidi Ó Sé's Pub at Árd a'Bhothair is an essential pilgrimage for any GAA-head worth their salt. Ventry is also home to a beautiful Catholic Church, Naomh Caitlin after the village's patron saint. Indeed Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman rented a sea-side cottage close to Ventry beach when they were filming Far and Away in West Kerry. Among the summer month's highlights is Ventry Regatta, where locals battle it out on the ocean waves on traditional Naomhóga. However, at the end of the day, there is nothing quite like strolling along Ventry beach, with the waves lapping at your feet watching the sun set over the Atlantic horizon.
