It is hard to believe that, until recently, this cottage had been home to a number of visitors to the area. Some came here seeking a return to a simpler lifestyle, others such as photographers and writers seeking inspiration from this house and its surroundings. Now it lies empty, keeper of the untold secrets of its past, and a testament to the skill of the men who built it. On a beautiful summers day, when the sun shines, one can feel the heartbreak the Kavanagh family must have felt when leaving this idyllic spot, heading for the Emigration Ships.

The
museum is in the old schoolhouse in Ballyferriter (built in 1875 - a monument
in itself!), 8 miles west
of the fishing port of
Dingle, at the west of the Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry. The museum also houses
a café (home baking!), and a book shop. A brand new bi-lingual (Irish
and English) exhibition has just been installed in the museum, interpreting
many aspects of the rich archaeological resource of the peninsula, and also of
the exciting historical events and personages that have coloured the area's
past. Part
of this is aided by two touch-screen exhibitions; One on the Ogham Stones of
the area, The other on the Early Christian period. These were grant-aided by
the Heritage Council, for which we are grateful. Many of the artefacts on
display are on loan from the National Museum of Ireland, and are therefore part
of the National Collection.
