Ventry Regatta
This year the regatta weekend gets underway on Saturday July 23th with a reasonably gentle walk of Ventry Parish, this starts at 10am at Ventry post office and should take about three hours. For those who prefer wheels to heels there is a cycle around Slea head on Saturday evening, this will be a family event and given the recent surge of interest in cycling in West Kerry a good turnout can be expected. The cycle leaves Ventry post office at 6.30 pm and proceeds clockwise around Slea Head, through Ballyferriter and back to Ventry. Muiris Fenton will be the Quiz master at the table quiz in Quinn’s Pub (The Ventry Inn) on Saturday night, starting at 9.00 pm.
Sunday is regatta day proper in Ventry although there is much more than naomhóg racing lined up. Onshore diversions are a long standing trairelandion at Ventry regatta and those who have read Fiche Bliain ag Fás might recall that it was here that a young Muiris O Suilleabháin downed his first pints of porter.
The Naomhog racing starts at 1.45 pm with the under 18 race followed , at half hourly intervals, by the senior men’s race, under 12, senior women’s, under 16, one man one woman, and concluding at 5 pm with the mixed race. There will be a kayak race before the last race at 4.45.
Entries for the naomhog races will be taken at the pier from 1.15 to 1.45pm, and competitors are strongly urged to get their entries in at this time to help the timely running of the event.
Meanwhile, the onshore events will be underway on the beach, starting at 1.00 pm with a sandcastle building competition. This is also called beach art competition to encourage those who are shy of being seen with a bucket and spade. The idea is to get creative with anything that can be found on the beach -sand included- and there are prizes for the most artisitic result.
Family sports get underway on the beach at 3.00 pm and these will include lots of races and novelty events for children, parents and the generally adventurous. The Cic Fada competition on the beach at 4.30 pm will challenge anyone who thinks they should be playing for Kerry. And after that it is off to the village for more craic and what ever is your pleasure.
A feis rince will start at 5.00 pm with reel and jig competitions for young dancers, who are encouraged to bring their dancing shoes. All those of a poetic inclination are invited to warm sharpen their pencils in preparation for a competition of verse, with a theme of “Mount Eagle” provided by Simon Ó Faoláin who is our invited poet for the occasion. The always highly contested horseshoe-throwing competition will be fought out on the village green at 7.00.
A new adirelandion this year is the Tráth na gCeist which will take place in Quinn’s pub on Saturday evening at 9.00 pm. |
